Statement on the Tragic Loss of 43 Lives in Road Accidents During Heroes Day Holiday

Safety For People On The Move (SFPOTM) is deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic loss of 43 lives in just five days during the Heroes Day holiday period. These individuals were not mere statistics; they were fathers, mothers, children, friends, and fellow citizens whose lives were cut short. Their families are now left grappling with unimaginable grief.

It is particularly alarming that Lusaka Province continues to top the list in the number of road traffic accidents. This tragedy is a stark and sobering reminder that urgent, coordinated, and sustained action is needed at every level—from policymakers and enforcement agencies to drivers, pedestrians, and communities at large.

As a leading road safety NGO, Safety For People On The Move extends its heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families. We stand in solidarity with the injured and all others affected by these preventable tragedies.

The Heroes Day holiday should be a time of national pride and celebration—not a period marked by mourning and road carnage. We believe it is time to treat road safety as a national emergency.

We urgently call for the following actions:

  1. Enhanced traffic enforcement in high-risk areas such as Lusaka Province.
  2. Public awareness campaigns to educate all road users on safe road practices.
  3. Stricter penalties for reckless driving, over-speeding, and drunk driving.
  4. Improved road infrastructure, including signage, lighting, and pedestrian crossings.
  5. Support services for victims and families affected by road crashes.

Every life lost is one too many. As a nation, we must act now—collectively and decisively—to make our roads safer for everyone.
